Location

Atuatuca Tungrorum, the ancient name of Tongeren, was the administrative chief place of the district of the people (civitas) der Tungri in the Roman ages. These Tungri formed an administrative federation of a few indigenous tribes in the time of emperor Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD) . In the decades before, they rebelled against the Roman invasion army of Julius Caesar.s.

As a result of the town destruction in 1213 by the troops of Duke Hendrik I of Brabant, the construction of the medieval walls began in 1241. This wall surrounded the town centre at that time, which is now defined by the present ring road.

On Sunday morning Tongeren becomes an international town and the place to be for a growing number of Dutch, German, French, British and American visitors. Just in front of our door you will find the largest antique and flea market of Europe. Opposite of the Moerenport at the Medieval walls You will find our Gallery. The historic house dates  from 1850.
